About Riverdale

A wooded ridge above the Hudson, twenty-some minutes from Grand Central.

Riverdale occupies the northwestern corner of the Bronx, where the street grid gives way to curving lanes, mature oaks, and stone walls. The land rises from the river in a series of terraces, and the higher you go the further you see — across the Hudson to the Palisades, south toward the George Washington Bridge.
It is one of the few places in New York City where the geography still dictates how things were built. Houses sit on real lots. Streets bend around outcroppings instead of cutting through them. Much of what stands today went up between the 1850s and the 1930s, when the neighborhood drew families out of Manhattan looking for air and space, and a good deal of it has been protected ever since; the Riverdale Historic District was landmarked in 1990.

Green in Every Direction

Few residential neighborhoods anywhere in the city are this well supplied with parkland.

Wave Hill, twenty-eight acres of formal gardens and woodland on a bluff above the river, functions as the cultural anchor—concerts in summer, a greenhouse worth the visit alone, and one of the great views in New York from its pergola. Riverdale Park runs north to south along the Hudson, a strip of old-growth woods with a trail that follows the water. Seton Park, at the southern end, is the neighborhood's everyday park: tennis courts, ball fields, a skate park, a playground, and enough open lawn for a picnic. And to the east, Van Cortlandt Park spreads across 1,146 acres—a lake, miles of trails through genuine forest, and the oldest public golf course in the country, laid out in 1895.

The City, Within Easy Reach

The Hudson Line runs along the river at the neighborhood's western edge, and the commute is the quiet advantage of living here.

From Spuyten Duyvil, the southernmost of Riverdale's two stations, Grand Central is roughly twenty-two minutes. The train is rarely crowded this far up, and the ride itself hugs the water most of the way.

By car, the Henry Hudson Parkway feeds directly onto the Henry Hudson Bridge and into Manhattan. Express buses on the BxM1 and BxM2 run to Midtown, and the 1 train at West 231st Street connects to the West Side.

Designed Around Everyday Life

Riverdale's commercial life is spread across a few walkable pockets rather than one main street. Johnson Avenue holds the practical center of the southern end

A grocery, a pharmacy, and a handful of cafés and family-run shops where people know each other. A few blocks east, Riverdale Avenue has become the neighborhood's dining spine, with Oaxacan cooking at Tobala, Latin tapas at Tin Marín, Asian-fusion plates and cocktails at Bokaguá, and Artizen for coffee and a place to work. North Riverdale adds a larger shopping corridor around Sky View Center and Mosholu Avenue.

The Spuyten Duyvil branch of the New York Public Library sits on West 235th Street, and the Riverdale YM-YWHA runs a pool, a gym, camps, and programming year-round.

Learning, Within Reach

A rare concentration of distinguished schools makes the neighborhood an exceptional place to learn and grow, with leading independent schools and universities all within easy reach.

The concentration of distinguished independent schools in the neighborhood is unusual for any one community. Horace Mann, Riverdale Country School, and Ethical Culture Fieldston are all located within the same square mile, offering families access to some of the area’s most respected educational institutions. Along the Hudson, Manhattan University and the University of Mount Saint Vincent further enrich the neighborhood with opportunities for higher education, creating an exceptional environment where learning and growth are an integral part of everyday life.
